Deadly South Los Angeles Garage Fire

Sunday, January 5, 2020

SOUTH LOS ANGELES - LAFD responded to an early morning fire in a detached garage, finding a woman dead inside after putting the fire out.

Dispatchers received the 9-1-1 call at 1:54 A.M. on January 5, 2020. Firefighters arrived to find a detached garage with flames blowing out of the windows and from the top of the roll-up garage door. Crews deployed hose lines and cut through the garage door with a rotary saw to make entry. The fire was fully extinguished by 2:09 A.M, just 15 minutes after the time of alarm, but sadly, it was already too late for a 58-year-old female who was beyond medical help.

The garage was sitting behind a vacant one-story home, and did not have electricity supplying the building. The length of time the woman had been living there is unknown. LAFD Arson investigators are working with LAPD Robbery/Homicide division to comb through debris, talk to witnesses, and peel back the layers of uncertainty surrounding the origin and circumstances of the fire.
