Four South Los Angeles residents escaped with little more than their lives Wednesday night, when flames erupted in a home not equipped with functional smoke alarms.
The was summoned at 9:19 PM on December 23, 2015 to in . Firefighters arrived quickly to find a well involved with fire. Having noted the odor of smoke just prior to bedtime, a man, woman and her two young daughters were able to escape fast-moving flames in the three bedroom home moments before the Fire Department arrived.
"It was a fortunate discovery" said ÃûæÂÖ±²¥ spokesman Brian Humphrey, who noted that the home had no functional , adding "this could have been a deadly blaze".
Twenty-seven LAFD firefighters under the command of Battalion Chief Ellsworth Fortman confined the fire to the structure, extinguishing the flames in just nine minutes, but not before the inferno caused an estimated $200,000 in damage ($150,000 structure & $50,000 contents), and left the family without possessions and temporarily homeless.
Though emotionally traumatizing, there were thankfully no injuries to the residents, neighbors or LAFD responders.
Due to the severity of the blaze, Chief Fortman provided the family with immediate monetary aid via the , while ably assisted the man, woman and her three- and four year-old daughters with crisis support and temporary placement assistance.
