A man and woman sustained serious though non-life threatening injuries, when they and others escaped fast-moving fire in a vacant home Sunday afternoon.
The was summoned at 3:53 PM on December 4, 2016 to in , where firefighters arrived quickly to discover a vacant craftsman style home well involved, with flames threatening an occupied two-story apartment building to the south, and a one-story occupied home to the north.
On arrival, fire crews noted as many as five adults escaping the boarded-up residence, two of whom sustained injury. The injured man, with burns to his head and ears, and the woman - who may have jumped from the second floor, sustaining facial trauma, were treated at the scene by LAFD Paramedics before being transported by ambulance to an area hospital in serious but stable condition.
Ninety-six firefighters under the command of Battalion Chief Michael Castillo extinguished the flames in just 33 minutes, confining the fire to the building of origin, with only radiant heat damage to the nearby apartment building.
No other injuries were reported.
Due to fire damage and the building's general state of disrepair, the presence of smoke alarms could not be immediately determined. The 102 year-old home was not equipped with residential fire sprinklers.
Monetary loss from the fire is still being tabulated. The cause of the greater alarm fire remains under active investigation.
